Starting School? Here’s Why Dance Is Still So Important

If your little one is about to begin their exciting journey into school, we know how big this transition can feel for both children and parents. New routines, early mornings, school uniforms, and those first-day nerves can make this season feel both exciting and overwhelming.
With so much changing, it may seem like the right time to take a break from extracurricular activities. However, we believe this is actually the perfect time to keep dancing — and here’s why.
Familiarity in a Time of Change
Starting school is a huge milestone and can take some adjusting to. Continuing with their weekly class provides your child with something familiar, fun, and comforting during a period of change.
Dance gives children a space where they already feel confident, supported, and successful. That sense of consistency can make a real difference as they settle into their new school routine.
Supporting Focus and Learning
Did you know that movement helps little minds grow?
Dance develops memory, coordination, concentration, and listening skills - all essential abilities that support learning in the classroom. Following instructions, remembering sequences, and working as part of a group are skills children practise every week in dance class.
A Safe Space for Big Feelings
Starting school can bring a mixture of emotions. Excitement, nervousness, pride, frustration, and uncertainty are all perfectly normal.
Young children don’t always have the words to express how they’re feeling, but dance provides a joyful and healthy outlet for self-expression. Through movement, music, and creativity, children can process emotions and build emotional resilience.
Building Confidence and Independence
Whether it’s mastering a new step, performing in front of their friends, or standing proudly at the front of the room, dance encourages children to believe in themselves.
Each achievement, no matter how small, helps build confidence and independence. These qualities naturally carry over into school life, helping children approach new challenges with a positive mindset.
Developing Social Skills and Friendships
Dance class is about so much more than movement.
It’s a place where friendships blossom, teamwork is encouraged, and important social skills are developed. Children learn to share, take turns, support one another, and communicate with confidence.
For quieter or more reserved children, dance can also be a wonderful way to find their voice and feel part of a community.
Most Importantly… It’s Still Fun!
With school starting, it’s more important than ever for children to have something in their week that is purely about joy.
At Highstone Dance Academy, children can laugh, move, sing, create, and shine in their own special way. We understand that some parents may worry their child will feel too tired after a day at school to attend dance class. However, in our experience, dance often has the opposite effect.
It provides children with an opportunity to release energy, have fun, unwind, and reset after a busy day of learning.
